The last few years at ad agencies and media outlets have been very exciting and extremely challenging at the same time. The recession has dragged on for a longer period than any economist or politician could have expected. Heck, even knoodle had a “The Recession Is Over” party 18 months ago. Now, we just hope it is over soon and curse the words “Double Dip” unless we are at Dairy Queen. The truth is that the recession hit when “new media” exploded and the 24 Hours Cable News Channels were getting their best ratings ever. Everywhere you turn, all you hear about is the how terrible the economy is. Fox News, CNN and MSNBC all have their right or left leaning slant on the economy and who is to blame. Every day consumers share a link on Twitter or Facebook on a worse than expected unemployment report or a low consumer confidence report, and it scares the hell out of all of us. Enough is enough. I’m tired of McCain, Kyl, Obama, Brewer, Pearce and all the other talking heads like O’Reilly, Scarbourough, Beck, Limbaugh and Maddow trying to scare me.
So everyone let’s take a breath, invest and get back to living. You know you want the new VW Beetle? Go buy it or lease it. You know you want to go out to dinner and not drink just water; order that high end cocktail and an appetizer. Live a little! Take that weekend trip to San Diego and go shopping and take the kids to Seaworld or LegoLand; you’ll have fun with the family and the world won’t end. The politicians, talking heads, pundits and economists are doing nothing to help the economy so it is up to us, the consumers. If we spend, the economy will improve, and hopefully we won’t get pepper sprayed trying to spend our hard earned dollars.
